During my fieldwork in Cape Verde 2000, I conducted a survey
among students in the final year of secondary school. This was a central data
source for my thesis. However, many results were not used in the thesis itself,
and I have taken the opportunity to present them here.
Note that these are simply descriptive results of the
survey, based on cross-tables of variables. This means that differences between
the two islands, for instance, could be spurious results of other variables. In
the thesis itself, I use regression models to estimate the isolated effect of
different independent variables. |
Cape verde and the future |

Do you agree or
disagree with the following statement?
Many unemployed people in Cape Verde could find work if
they wanted to |
Comments |
 |
There is undoubtedly
lack of work in Cape verde, but one also hears people say that many unemployed
people could find work if they really wanted to. Many are just waiting for a
chance to emigrate, or waiting they are for the rain. In total, slightly more
than half agree to the statement. However, there is a considerable difference
between the two islands. |

Do you agree or
disagree with the following statement?
Cape Verde's future seems prosperous |
Comments |
 |
More than fifty per
cent agree that Cape verde's future seems prosperous, while about a third
disagree. There seems to be more optimism on Santo Antão than on
São Vicente. It is interesting that the middle socio-economic group
seems to be more optimistic about the Country's future than both the poorer and
the wealthier. |

Do you agree or
disagree with the following statement?
When my parents were young, their life was easier than
young people's lives today |
Comments |
 |
About one third of
those who have an opinion think that life was easier for young people one
generation ago than today. As expected, there is a clear tendency that students
from poorer households are more inclined to agree with this than students from
wealthier households. The difference between São Vicente and Santo
Antão could be due to the rapid increase in living standards on Santo
Antão, primarily as a result of better infrastructure. |

Do you agree or
disagree with the following statement?
Cape Verde's problems are getting bigger day by day
|
Comments |
 |
While most students
think that Cape Verde's future seems prosperous, the majority also agreed to
the statement that problems are getting bigger day by day. Girls seem to be
somewhat more concerned than boys. The most frequently mentioned problems were
drugs, delinquency, poverty, unemployment and drought and sexually transmitted
diseases. |

Do you agree or
disagree with the following statement?
It would have been better to use Kriol in class |
Comments |
 |
About a third of the
students think that it would be better to use Kriol in class, although many of
them pointed to practical difficulties. There is little difference between
genders or islands, but a clear tendency that support for Kriol in school is
stronger among the students from poorer households than among those from
wealthier households. |

Do you agree or
disagree with the following statement? The Cape
Verdean people are an African people |
Comments |
 |
Most students agreed
that Cape Verdeans are Africans, and the strongest agreement was found among
the poor. However, many saw this as a sensitive and difficult question. As one
girl put it, 'if you say no, they would call you a racist, and if you say yes,
then people criticize you for that as well'. |

Do you you have a good companionship with your
classmates? |
Comments |
 |
The vast majority say
that they get along well with their classmates, that they have 'boa
konvivénsia'. However, there is apparently a relationship with the
household situation, in that more students from wealthier households are also
more satisfied with their social environment at school. |

Do you like to go dancing? |
Comments |
 |
Dancing is a major
pasttime in Cape Verde, and especially in São Vicente, there is a
vibrant night life. On the whole, about one third of the students say that they
like going out, and one third say that they don't. Apparently, the students
from wealthier families are more inclined to going out. |

Do your parents allow you to go dancing? |
Comments |
 |
While more than 90 per
cent of the boys are free to go dancing when they wish, about one fifth of the
girls are never allowed, and another quarter are only allowed to go from time
to time. Parents in Santo Antão seem to be sligtly more restrictive than
in São Vicente. |
