How religious actors, ideas and institutions influence social and political change

The religion research team examines the relationships (implicit and explicit) between religion, conflict and peacebuilding. We explore how religious actors, ideas and institutions influence social and political processes in pursuit of change. The religion research team shares an interest in exploring the explicit and implicit relationships between religion, conflict and peacebuilding. We explore how religious actors, ideas and institutions influence social and political processes in pursuit of change. Our projects investigate:

What are the religious factors influencing cooperation and conflict?

What roles do religious actors, networks and - institutions play in peace processes?

What are, according to the major religions, the ethical foundations guiding the use of armed force?

What is the interconnection between religious doctrines, practices, and motivations on matters relating to peacebuilding and war?

The researchers combine various disciplinary backgrounds, including development studies, philosophy, political science, religious studies, social geography and sociology. Religion research at PRIO combines solid empirical work with strong theoretical ambitions. We aim at furthering the scholarly study of religion, while at the same time providing relevant knowledge and analysis to policymakers and practitioners.
