Research interests My research interest focus on migration and transnationalism, including an interest in transnational practices such as remittances, which was the main focus of my doctoral research. These interests are set within the broader context of connections between migration and development. I am interested in both sending and receiving contexts of migration, including individal actor perspectives, as well as those of families, local communities and at the societal level. I am currently exploring the important connections between migration, religion and development, in the context of Pakistan and Pakistani diaspora in Norway, Islamic charity and transnational monetary transfers. My interests also include temporal dimensions of migration, which I am currently exploring in relation to considerations about the possibility of retunr migration, as well experiences with actual return migration, from Norway to Pakistan and to Poland. While my focus is primarily on the experiences and reflections of individual actors, I am also interested in the interplay of structure and agency, which largely shapes the opportunities and environments that both individuals and policy makers can act upon.
Geographic foucs I have conducted research in South Asia and among diasporas from South Asia, with a particular focus on Pakistan and Pakistan migrants and descendants in Norway (2007-). Prior to this I have also conducted research with Afghan refugees in New Delhi (2001) and with Sri Lankan Tamils in Norway (2004-2005). I am currently also involved in research among Polish migrants in Norway and return migrants in Poland. My research is mainly based on qualitative research methods, in particular using semi-structured interviews and focus groups as data collection tools.
