Research Interest
I worked full time at PRIO from 2000 to 2002, and have returned as a visiting researcher several times since. While at PRIO I work mostly on issues relating to war, democratization and intervention, the foundations of state sovereignty, and global justice. From 2005 to 2007, I taught at the International Summer School. Among my publications in political philosophy are “Liberty, Statehood, and Sovereignty: Walzer on Mill on Non-Intervention” (Journal of Military Ethics 2(1), 46-62) and The Ethics of War: Classic and Contemporary Readings (co-edited with Henrik Syse and Greg Reichberg, Blackwell, 2006).
While much of my work remains rooted in normative theory, I try to use philosophical insights to explore questions that intersect with fields such as developmental economy, governance, and law. Among my ongoing PRIO-related projects is a collaboration with Håvard Strand. Here we explore the conditions of political stability in what John Rawls (in his book The Law of Peoples) called decent, non-liberal regimes, and ask how their relative instability may affect the policies that liberal regimes should adopt towards them.
My academic background is in philosophy, and I also work on issues in philosophy of mind and language. You can learn more about my work in these areas, and also download drafts of my papers, by clicking here. In the year 2008-2009, I am teaching at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California.
