I am currently working on a PhD studying the effects of civil war on maternal and child health. Wars kill, before, during, and after military operations. Before the actual conflict starts, military expenditures often rise and divert resources from health services and medical care. During conflict, both soldiers and civilians suffer from morbidity and mortality directly inflicted by firearms and other tools of violence. In addition, major losses of life and negative health effects stem from indirect and unintended consequences of armed conflict. The health consequences, in turn, further hamper development and contribute to the ‘conflict trap’.

Former studies on the causes and effects of civil war have focused on the nation-state and have employed country-level data. However, battles may take place within a geographically limited area and have local effects, which it is not possible to study using the current country-average data. Similarly, conflicts do not necessarily follow state boundaries, and should not be treated independently of neighbouring and regional dynamics.

The Phd focuses on sub-Saharan Africa, and I combine cross-country studies with DHS data with field work from two different locations in Sudan (Juba and Magwe).
