France24 Interview on South Sudan

Live television interview on the January referendum and prospects for peace in South Sudan.

In the five minute interview, Mark commented that: "Today’s declaration of results is very much the final stage of the technical referendum process.  Now the political discussions and negotiations really commence - both in Juba and South Sudan itself and, of course, between Juba and Khartoum.  Clearly it’s not just an issue of state building vis-a-vis the constitution, political institutions and law order.  It’s very much also nation building.  South Sudan is not a homogenous entity.  There are numerous groups all who will be vying for political power over the coming months and years...The news from the weekend [violence in Jonglei state], does not bring a great deal of hope.  The north-south potential conflict has been discussed a great deal in the past but what we really need to keep an eye on is the south-south internal conflict.”
