 Thursday, 22 Jul 2010 | Launch of New Research from PRIO Cyprus CentreTurkey stands to gain a peace dividend of over EUR 17 billion every year from a solution of the Cyprus problem, according to new research published by the Cyprus Centre of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), with new annual gross revenue of EUR 12.3 billion and annual cost savings of EUR 5.1 billion. This is equivalent to 3.5% of Turkey’s GDP. A preview of benefits to Greece also identified at least EUR 3 billion per year for Greece.

 Monday, 19 Jul 2010 | Long-time PRIO-associate Håkan Wiberg passed away in his home in Copenhagen on 3 July 2010. Wiberg’s last visit to PRIO was in June 2009, when he took part in the celebration of the institute’s 50th Anniversary, and attended his last editorial meeting of the Journal of Peace Research (JPR). Håkan Wiberg was a frequent visitor to PRIO from the mid-1960s onwards. In 1980 and 1982 he spent several months as a guest researcher at PRIO. Wiberg remained in close contact with PRIO and served on the editorial committee of JPR continuously since 1977 – a total of 33 years – longer than anyone else. More... |

 Wednesday, 14 Jul 2010 | Anders Bratholm, Professor of Law at the University of Oslo, and an important individual for the foundation of PRIO, passed away on 8. July 2010, 90 years old. Bratholm played an essential role in the foundation of PRIO. Bratholm was also a major supporter of the Institute for Social Research (ISF), where PRIO was first established as a department in 1959. He was part of the informal circle referred to as the gentlemen club (‘herreklubben’), alongside Torstein Eckhoff (1916-93; also Professor of Law at the University of Oslo) and Einar M. Hauglie (colonel in the Norwegian Army). More... |

Thursday, 08 Jul 2010 | The project Converging and conflicting ethical values in the internal/external security continuum in Europe (INEX) under the EU 7th Framework Program coordinated by PRIO, will host a panel debate on EU security policy-making in the Mediterranean: Consequences in value and ethical terms, at the 2010 World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES) in Barcelona on July 20. The panel will be chaired by Prof. Pinar Bilgin from Bilkent University (Ankara) who leads work package 6 (The Mediterranean neighborhood) of the INEX project. In conjunction with WOCMES, there will be a INEX-workshop hosted by Bilkent University and The Centro de Investigación de relaciones Internacionales y Desarrollo (CIDOB-Foundation). The workshop will bring together experts, practitioners and scholars to discuss the implications of the internal/external security continuum for the countries in the Middle East, with particular emphasis on the Mediterranean neighborhood (Egypt, Algeria and Morocco) More... |
