Utstein Study Reports Available
The final version of the synthesis report from the Joint Utstein Study of Peacebuilding is now available. The aim of the study was better implementation of existing policies on peacebuilding in the four original Utstein governments (Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK).
Studies were prepared of each country’s peacebuilding policy and activities. Together with the wider literature on conflict and peacebuilding, that material forms the basis of a synthesis report written by Dan Smith at PRIO. The Norwegian study was written by Wenche Hauge, also at PRIO. A successful International Seminar based on this report was held 1-2 December 2003. It was hosted by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in close cooperation with the Evaluation Departments of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the UK Department for International Development, with practical arrangements made by PRIO. A keynote Address was delivered by the Norwegian Minister of International Development Ms Hilde Frafjord Johnson. PRIO director, Stein Tønnesson, was the facilitator on the second day. Further PRIO involvement was secured by Deputy Director Hilde Henriksen Waage, Director for the Centre for the Study of Civil War, Scott Gates, and Kristian Berg Harpviken.
