Call for Applications: Research School in Peace and Conflict

Deadline: 12 February 2012.

The University of Oslo (UiO), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) are running a research school in peace and conflict studies located at PRIO. The Research School in Peace and Conflict Studies offers advanced research training for the next generation of peace and conflict scholars by building on, and expanding, networks and expertise at the UiO, NTNU and PRIO. The collaboration is characterized by multidisciplinary approaches to peace and conflict issues, international profile and outlook, and research excellence. PRIO hosts Nobel Peace Prize laureate Leymah Gbowee at film screening in Oslo

At Vika Kino in Oslo, PRIO screens the film "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" about Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee's mobilization of Liberian women to end the country's civil war. Leymah Gbowee herself will be present, and so will Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women; Jonas Gahr Støre, Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs; and the two film makers Abigail Disney and Gini Reticker. ​​A Peace Prize To Celebrate!

We should truly celebrate the fact that this year’s Nobel peace prize has been awarded to three women who in various ways have demonstrated the decisive nature of women’s participation for efforts to create lasting peace. For far too long, understandings of women’s roles in war have been marked by a one-sided focus on their need for protection. Like children and old people, women have generally been viewed as helpless victims of war and violence. Their political significance is often defined in terms of their need for protection, rather than what they can contribute to efforts to bring an end to conflict and rebuild society after war. Kalle Moene Given Excellence in Communications Award

​CSCW Working Goroup Leader Kalle Moene was announced the 2011 recepient of the Award for Excellence in Comminication of Science at the opening of the Norwegian National Research Festival 23 September. The award is given by the Research Council of Norway. Its goal is to reward the use of original, creative communication measures, and the initiative must be directed toward the general public. The winner must have demonstrated outstanding ability and innovation in communicating the results of his or her research. More...

Nils Petter Gleditsch receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Conflict Processes Section at the American Political Science Association (APSA) selected Nils Petter Gleditsch as the recipient of the prestigious bi-annual award, adding him to a short list of scholars who have fundamentally influenced the field. The award was handed over at the annual APSA meeting in Seattle 1-4 September. More...
